Born in Ribeauville, Colonel Jean-François-Arsène Klobb was sent by the French government to the Sudan (1891-92), where he helped to unite the Meharist groups. He was ordered to remove the officers and explorers charles chanoine and paul voulet from their command because of their violent mistreatment of the indigenous people and replace them at their post, but instead he was assassinated by the two. They, in turn, were later killed by their own soldiers.
